Operation Systems and WebsitesWhen webmasters begin their website, they rarely consider the factors needed to run a successful online business. Many just want the fast and easy route – complete with an already made website, click and drop programs instead of plain html, and a ready to go domain name. However, it is extremely crucial that website owners look at the more important factors when they begin their site. In order to run a successful online business or website, ones website host must have the right operating system. This is an important factor when determining how your site is going to run. There are mainly three different types of operating systems. The first is one that everyone knows of – Windows based web hosts. These can be easily accessed and usually include e-mail programs like Microsoft Access and ASP, which are active server pages that are embedded into your site. This type of operating system is great for someone who is on a shared or dedicated server, but it also can get very expensive, especially for someone who is just starting out. Another alternative is using Linux or Unix. Although they are two different programs, they generally have the same features and do the same thing. These programs can handle thousands and thousands of visitors each day, making the bandwidth and your stress very manageable. It is a great choice for someone who is looking for an affordable plan, and can access the program from any computer with internet access. Many large businesses love using Linux or UNIX because they are reliable and extremely easy to use. Unfortunately, this can mean that security is always hazy. There have been many reportings of Linux systems being hacked into. Therefore, it is important to keep an eye on all of the programs that you are running. Overall, all types of operating systems are great for websites. However, it just depends on what you want and where you are at in your business. If a company is large, chances are they will go for the Linux or UNIX operating system to go with their hosting company. This will ensure that they will have a reliable host that will not have a lot of downtime. If it is an average website, chances are they might go for a Windows based operating system because of their familiarity and the programs that go along with it (including Microsoft Access). Luckily, no matter what the webmaster wants, there is always a solution out there. |
